Living in Malta: what to expect
What to expect from everyday life on the island, beyond the holiday.
Language and communication
English is an official language alongside Maltese and is understood by about 90% of the population: you don’t need to speak Maltese to live and work on the island. Italian is also widely spoken, especially by generations who grew up with Italian TV.
Size and getting around
Malta is small (about 27 km long): most journeys between the main areas take a few minutes or at most an hour by car, which makes daily life easy even without much planning.
Italian and expat community
Its geographical and linguistic closeness to Italy has built a well-established Italian community on the island over the years, alongside a large international population linked to the gaming, tech and finance sectors.
Climate
A Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year and mild winters: outdoor living is possible for most of the year, not just in summer.
European Union
EU citizens do not need a visa to move to Malta: the normal EU free-movement rules apply. For specific residence procedures, we still recommend consulting a local professional.
